New Delhi, Mar 18 (UNI) Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi today moved the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha, which seeks to set an upper age limit on the tenure of its chairman.
Tabling the Bill, the Minister said provision of age was not fixed and there was no upper age limit for the present chairman.
He said the proposed amendment would help in attracting competent professionals who were reluctant to join Prasar Bharati Corporation as they felt there was little time to develop or contribute substantially to it.
The urgency was being felt on three counts: Prasar Bharati workers were facing enormous problems since 1990 when the institution was set up. Restructuring of the Prasar Bharati would help in protecting employers' interests, giving it professional management and provide competition to private channels.
Mr Dasmunsi told the members that he would be meeting the Finance Minister in this regard on whether employees could be covered under the Sixth Pay Commission. The final report would be given to the Cabinet.
With 2010 Commonwealth Games knocking on the door, it was imoerative that the entire board formation be completed and existing vacancies filled fast, he said.
