Kathmandu, Mar.19 : The ruling Nepali Congress has asked Maoists to stop attacking leaders and cadres of other parties and terrorising people ahead of the April 10 Constituent Assembly polls.

Nepal News quoted Prakash Sharan Mahat, the chairman of the party's polls publicity committee, as saying on Wednesday that the Nepali Congress is concerned about reports of Maoist cadres injuring, attacking or terrorising people and members of the other parties.

Reiterating his party's stand on protection of personal liberties and rights, Dr Mahat called on the Maoist leadership to train their cadres on democracy and human rights if they are really to abide by their past commitments.

Mahat also raised objection against the misuse of the government media. "The government media have been turned like party's propaganda machinery," Mahat added.

Amidst reports that Maoist combatants have been used for poll campaigning in Chitwan, Rolpa and Surkhet districts, Dr Mahat drew the attention of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) towards taking daily attendance of the combatants in the cantonments to ensure they would not be used in the polls.

Dr Mahat also came down heavily against the UML's attempt to mobilise the staff of National Sports Council to campaign for the party.

He also condemned the murder of a poll candidate in Banke last night by Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha led by Jwala Singh.
