Chetan Chauhan, Nikhil Chopra in debate on 1983, 2007 WC wins

By Staff

New Delhi Mar 19 (UNI) With an aim to address and respond to various issues pertaining to cricket and cricketing fraternity answers to which have been indefinable, Ceat Ltd launched the 'The CEAT big Cricket debate' here today.

The topic debated was the much talked about issue 'Is the 1983 World Cup win bigger than the 2007 Twenty20?'.

It saw former Indian cricketing legend Chetan Chauhan and former off-spinner Nikhil Chopra debating along with eminent sports journalists on this topic. A number of past and present cricketers and cricketing enthusiasts were also part of the debate.

While Chopra was of the view that the victory in the Twenty20 World Cup was more important than the one in 1983, Chetan Chauhan expressed the reverse view.

According to Chauhan, India did not have any standing in the cricketing world before 1983. It was only after the historic triumph in the World Cup that year which established India as a cricketing power.

However, the debate fianlly ended with the unaminous verdict that both victories were important for Indian cricket.
