Top commander of HM killed in south Kashmir

Srinagar Mar 18: A self-styled District Commander (DC) of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) was killed by the security forces in south Kashmir today, a senior police officer said.

Superintendent of Police Awantipora Sardar Khan said a joint operation was launched by 55 and 31 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police at village Dongripora, Awantipora, in Pulwama district late last night following a tip-off about the presence of some top militants there.

When the security forces were about to storm the particular area, militants opened fire. The fire was returned and the gunbattle continued for several hours during which one militant was killed, hiding in a cowshed of Abdul Hamid Bhat.

Two AK rifles, one pistol, one grenade, two RPG rounds,56 AK rounds, and three pistol rounds were recovered from the slain militant.

The spokesman said slain commander Chota Jehangir, very active in Anantnag district, was involved in killing of four people including Muhammad Akram Bhat ,the brother of former Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri in Zerapora, Bijbehara in 2005. Besides,the militant was also involved in two mine blast in Hamzapora and Panjpora in 2006 and firing on security forces in Panjpora.
