Agartala, Mar 18 (UNI) Tripura Governor D N Sahaya has assured that the newly formed Left Front government in Tripura would give utmost importance to eradication of poverty and improvement of overall socio-economic condition of the people.
Addressing the first session of the 10th Tripura Legislative Assembly here yesterday, Mr Sahaya said a number of areas had already been identified on which special attention would be devoted in the days to come.
''Availability of adequate and high quality infrastructure still remains one of the major bottlenecks in the efforts to achieve rapid progress,'' he said, adding that the new government would actively pursue the Centre to provide support and adequate resources for development of infrastructure.
''A mid-term appraisal of the perspective plan indicates that we are more or less on course to achieve the target of self-sufficiency in foodgrain production,'' Mr Sahaya said.
He said the main thrust area in agriculture would be to bring more area under irrigation, increase use of fertilizers, more effective credit support to farmers and improved methods of jhum (slash and burn) cultivation.
The Governor pointed out that in the forest sector, the externally-aided JBIC project had been sanctioned and was under implementation for the state while another Germany-assisted project was also likely to be sanctioned very soon.
''The Centre has finally sanctioned two important projects - four lining of NH 44 from Chouribari to Sabroom and railway extension from Agartala to Sabroom - following sustained pressure from the state government,'' he added.
