Railways' freight revenue increases by 13.41 per cent

New Delhi, Mar 17 (UNI) The Railways generated Rs 42696.22 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the first eleven months of the current fiscal as compared to Rs 37648.87 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 13.41 per cent.

Railways carried 714.25 million tonnes of freight traffic during April 2007-February 2008 as compared to 655.35 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, reflecting an increase of 8.99 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 429093 million to 461368 million during the period -- an increase of 7.52 per cent.

The earnings from freight traffic during February this year were Rs 4404.22 crore, compared to Rs 3571.62 crore during the corresponding period last year, marking an increase of 23.31 per cent.

Railways carried 70.54 million tonnes of freight traffic during February this year compared to 61.67 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 14.38 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 39880 million during February 2007 to 45936 million during February this year, showing an increase of 15.19 per cent.

Of the total earnings during February 2008, Rs 1610.94 crore came from transportation of 29.31 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 748.34 crore from transpartation of 11.96 million tonnes of iron ore, Rs 365.56 crore from 3.84 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 358.19 crore from 7.09 million tonnes of cement and Rs 266.43 crore from transportation of 3.16 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL).

In addition, it earned Rs 238.64 crore from 2.29 million tonnes of iron and finished steel, Rs 179.35 crore from 2.71 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs 172.19 crore from 2.31 million tones of container service, Rs 69.52 crore from 1.01 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore and Rs 395.06 crore from transportation of 6.86 million tonnes of other goods.
