Indian Wells, March 17: Second-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova and fourth-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova both advanced to the fourth round of the $2.1 million Pacific Life Open on Sunday.
Kuznetsova rallied from a second-set loss and got past Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 on Day 5 of this 12-day event at the beautiful Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Sharapova had an easy time with Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 7-5, 6-3 while defending champion and fifth-seeded Slovakian Daniel Hantuchova downed China's Jie Zheng 6-4, 6-2.
The upset of the day saw eighth-seeded Russian Dinara Safina get defeated by American Ashley Harkleroad 7-5, 6-2. Another minor upset saw 21st-seeded Indian Sania Mirza take out ninth-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer 6-7 (7-9), 7-5, 6-3.
Tenth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland handled China's Shuai Peng 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 while 15th-seeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko breezed past 17th-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France 6-1, 6-2.
Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the next round with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Japan's Aiko Nakamura.
The 2008 Indian Wells titlist will collect $332,000.
