Kullu, Mar 17 (UNI) Six people died, while eight were seriously injured and several others were feared dead after huge boulders fell on about 50 make shift shops near the tourist place of Nehru Khund in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh today.
The incident occurred at about 1715 hrs about 200 metres from Nehru Khund and about six to seven km from the famous tourist resort of Manali towards Rohtang Pass, Manali SDM Vinay Singh Thakur told UNI here.
He said three bodies have been pulled out from under the boulders, while three other bodies were visible from a distance could not be pulled out as the boulders were still falling.
Eight others who had a miraculous escape have been admitted to a government hospital at Manali, he added.
Mr Singh said ITBP, GREF, Mountaineering Institute, police and home guard personnel have reached the incident site to help in rescue and relief operations, which were hampered due to falling boulders and pitch darkness in the area.
It was still not yet clear as to how the boulders started rolling down the hill and how many people were killed, he added Unofficial sources said the boulders fell in an area of about 100 metres and whipped out 40 to 50 make shift shops near Nehru Khund.
Several vehicles are stranded on the Manali-Leh Road after the incident, the sources added.
