Jammu, Mar 17 (UNI) A 300 MW hydro-electric project will be set up on river Ujjh in Kathua district, which will also generate employment for about 5,000 people besides electricity, Minister of State for Power Babu Singh here said.
Addressing a public meeting yesterday, Mr Singh said the project will be set-up in village Panjtirthi of Kathua.
The government, he said, has also identified 5,000 kanals of land at Kathua for setting up a 1000 MW Thermal Power Plant already sanctioned by the Centre.
''This will generate employment for 10,000 people,'' he asserted.
Attaining self-sufficiency in power generation and fool-proof monitoring of power distribution has remained the focus of the state government, he said.
The Minister underlined the urgent need of tapping the abundant hydro-electric potential of the state for achieving self-sufficiency and lessening the dependence on the import of power from outside the state.
Apart from mega hydro-electric projects, Mr Singh said that 28 mini and micro electricity projects are also being set-up in different parts of the state.
Work is also on for augmenting and updating the infrastructural set-up to curb power leakage and power loss at various stages, he added.
