Puri, Mar 15 (UNI) Hundreds of Scheduled Caste villagers of Alarpur Bhoi Sahi under Brahmagiri police station today demonstrated in front of the Superintendent of Police office here, demanding action against the upper caste villagers for assaulting and setting ablaze their houses.
Official sources said about 14 SC families had allegedly encroached the endowment of Alarnath temple since long.
They were asked to vacate the land and on refusal to do so the upper caste villagers had allegedly attacked them and torched their dwellings.
They alleged that the police was not responding to their complaints. Two houses of Paria Kandi and Dolia kandi were razed to ground, while six were injured in the attack.
Fire tenders from Puri extinguished the fire.
Police registered six complaints, filed by the Scheduled Caste villagers, and criminal cases against some upper caste people.
Armed police forces had been deployed to contain further law and order problem, as a precautionary measure.
Police had seized two tractors.
The victims had demanded the SP to depute a police officer from the district headquarters, stating that they have no faith in the local police officer.
