Imphal, Mar 15 (UNI) The Headquarters, IG Assam Rifles(South), today observed its fifth foundation day here.
The force was raised on March 15, 2004 to exercise operational control and administer all forces of Assam Rifles in Manipur, including 4 Sector Headquarters and 21 Battalion.
Within a short span of time, HQ IGAR (South) achieved success in combating insurgency and creating conducive environment for development and prosperity in Manipur.
Friendly operations led to elimination of 208 militants, 1148 apprehensions, 24 surrenders besides, capturing a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, the PRO of Assam Rifles said.
The Headquarters undertook various development activities for uplift of Manipuris and actively involved itself in checking anti-social activities like smuggling of drugs, illicit liquor, arms and ammunition.
The biggest achievement of AR troops under HQ IGAR (South) had been to evict proscribed elements from 'Liberated Zone' by undertaking 'Operation Samtal' and the state government is doing its best to establish its authority in the region.
HQ IGAR (South) and the units under command have earned awards for 167 officers, 79 JCOs, 235 ORs and 9 Civilian Staff.
Speaking on the occasion, Major General BK Chengapa, emphasised on conduct of people-friendly operations and promoting multifaceted developmental programmes to contribute significantly towards betterment of the people. He said troops under IGAR (South) would continue to be proactive in operation against insurgents.
