110 observers to monitor Nepal polls: EU

Kathmandu, Mar 15: The European Commission will send 110 election observers to monitor the April 10 Constituent Assembly elections in Nepal. Member of the European Parliament Jan Mulder will lead the Election Observation Mission (EOM) team that will begin its official observation from March 17.

The mission consists of 40 long-term observers, to be deployed on March 22 and other 60 short-term observers will be deployed in the main parts of the country just before the polls day. Apart from this, the team will include a core team of 10 experts. The mission will remain in Nepal for 10 weeks.

"The elections for the Constituent Assembly are a cornerstone in the peace process in Nepal. The Constituent Assembly will provide the Nepalese population with a forum to carry forward democratic reform in the society," nepalnews.com quoted Commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, as saying.
