Rajahmundry, Mar 14: Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today dedicated to the nation the first phase of the Thota Venkatachalam Pushkara lift irrigation scheme near Purushothapatnam village in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.
Ms Gandhi, who came to Rajahmundry by a special flight from New Delhi, switched on the motors, thereby releasing water to 80,000 acres, and unveiled a pylon. The Rs 600 crore project would provide irrigation water to 1.86 lakh acres of land and drinking water to 136 villages in this district.
The Congress president also inaugurated a photo exhibition on Jalayagnam, the massive irrigation project scheme of the State Irrigation department.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, AICC General Secretary-incharge of Party Affairs in the State M Veerappa Moily, Union Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju, APCC acting president G S Rao and State Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah were among those who participated in the function.
Later, Ms Gandhi left for Jaggampet to address 'Raithu Mahotsava Sabha', a public meeting in which about five lakh people were expected to participate.
