Chandigarh, Mar 14 (UNI) Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gen (Retd) S F Rodrigues today strongly advocated the need for establishing a state apex body for ex-servicemen to act as a comprehensive single window mechanism for the redressal of their problems.
He further suggested that district level chapters should be set up for responding to the specific needs of the ex-servicemen and their families.
Delivering the inaugural address on the theme 'Veterans and Society' organised by United Service Institution of India at Chandimandir, General Rodrigues called upon the serving and retired members of armed forces to expand their role for the empowerment of common man.
He stressed that the ex-servicemen must utilise their experience, professional expertise and knowledge in guiding the national endeavour for bringing about transformation and social equality in society.
He said that the United Service Institution of India (USI) was tabled for upgrading the professional capabilities and research based knowledge of defence personnel and suggested the need for expanding its activities to every state in the country to create various programmes for the welfare of the ex-servicemen and members of their families.
USI director Lt Gen (Retd) Satish Nambia, in his welcome address highlighted the goals and objectives of the organisation.
Western Command Goc-in-C Lt Gen T K Sapru and other senior serving and retired army officers were present on the occasion.
