Chandigarh, Mar 14 (UNI) The Punjab State Pharmacy Council has decided to cancel the licences of all those chemists in the state who had been convicted by court for keeping or selling intoxicants, prohibited drugs and substances.
Stating this here today, Medical Education Minister Tikshan Sud said the Punjab State Pharmacy Council has taken this decision to check the increasing cases of drug addiction in the state.
The Minister said that it was found that once a drug license was issued to an chemist, it was never cancelled irrespective of the fact whether that chemist was caught in dangerously harmful practices like promoting drug addiction.
He said that violation of Drug and Cosmetic Act and other Acts regulating the profession was taking place on large scale in the state.
The Minister said that the department has written to all SSPs in the state to supply them a list of those chemists who had been convicted in various cases so that their drug licenses could be cancelled under the law.
The Minister said that the state government was committed to check the growing menace of drug addiction in the state that has been eating into the vitals of youth in Punjab.
The Minister said the Pharmacy Council would organise refresher courses for the chemists and a campaign to bring awareness in them against the menace of drug addition.
