OBC MPs ask Government to hold on Judges appointments
New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) A meeting of the Forum of OBC Members of Parliament today demanded putting on hold the proposal to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 26 to 31 till the recommendations of the E M Sudarshana Nachiappan Committee on SCs, STs and OBCs in higher judiciary were implemented.
The Forum convened by senior Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and handed him a memorandum saying that the claims of judges from SCs, Sts and OBCs were 'deliberately ignored' after the Judiciary took over the powers to elect and appoint the judges from the Executive. There was no dearth of candidates from these sections for the judge's appointments.
However it was nothing but social discrimination and caste bias against the candidates and more disturbing was the fact that the Government too was consistently ignoring the instances of injustices at various levels. It was of utmost importance that the Union Government assured the socially deprived sections by showing bonafindes and putting on hold the move to create additional posts, the forum having over 60 MPs across all political parties urged.
