Chandigarh, Mar 14 (UNI) Captivating performances by Dr Hari Charan Verma (Vocal) and Padma Bhushan Guru Swapnasundari (Kuchipudi) marked the inauguration of the three-day 38th All-India Bhaskar Rao Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan here today.
Inaugurated by Home Secretary, Chandigarh Administration Krishna Mohan, the programme got off to a majestic start with Hari Charan Verma's vocal recital.
His presentation of Raga Bihag was beautiful with the melodious blend of slow-fast combinations. He concluded his recital with Braj ki hori 'Bindh jayoge nainan mein, dagar mori chharo Shyam' which created a divine atmosphere of Hori of Mathura and Vrindavan.
He was accompanied by leading Harmonium and organ player Jayram Potdar, Sudhir Pandey on the Tabla while support on Taanpura was provided by Taposi and Pushpita Sen.
After Dr. Verma, renowned Kuchipudi exponent Swapnasundari took the centre-stage with ceremonial invocation to Lord Venkateswara (Balaji) of Tirupati followed by 'Jathi Swaram' in 'Raga Amrita Varshini (Rupaka Talam)' in which she displayed her rhythmic virtuosity and dance technique (Nritya).
She then moved to present ''Meenakshi Shabdam'', a narrative dance describing the attempts made by Goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, to win the love of Lord Shiva who is in Tapasya. The piece was set in 'Raga Athana' (Adi Talam).
The 'Abhinaya' piece was followed by concluding 'Tarangam' in 'Raga Bilahari set to Adi Talam'. This popular and exciting dance item was based on Shree Krishna Leela Tarangini of Narayana Teertha, culminating with a display of dance virtuosity on a brass plate.
She was accompanied by a good orchestra lead by N.C. Raghunandan on the Nattuvangam, Lalgudi Sriganesh on the Mridangam, K. Chandra Rao on Vocal and Raju on the Flute.
