Dehra Dun, Mar 13: Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to provide 50 per cent reservation for women in Panchayats.
The Uttarakhand Panchayat Law (Amendment) Act, 2008, was approved by voice vote in the State Legislative Assembly yesterday, paving the way for reserving half of the total seats for women in all the three tiers of the Panchayati Raj system.
Various NGOs in the state working for the empowerment of women have hailed the passage of the Act.
Panchayati Raj Minister Bishan Singh Chufal had tabled the Act in the House on Monday.
At present, women enjoy 33 per cent reservation in the Panchayati Raj system under the 73rd Amendment.
