New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the UP government, seeking a factual report within four weeks on the plight of women inmates and their babies in jails of the state.
Taking suomotu cognisance of the a news report, the Commission has asked the State Chief Secretary to provide the report.
The NHRC said human rights of the women inmates and their babies were being violated.
According to the report, thousands of women accused of committing atrocities related to dowry are languishing in jails.
It said women in the age of 17 to 70 years, had been wrongly confined in jails.
''A number of them are disabled and sick and many of them have nursing babies,'' it added.
The Commission after going through the report has asked to provide a factual report within four weeks.
