New Delhi, Mar 13: Several Left and Opposition MPs today asked the government in the Lok Sabha not to close down the existing airports at Bangalore and Hyderabad after the inauguration of the new green field airports in the private sector.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mr Basudev Acharia (CPI-M) said when the agreement was signed with the private sector in 1999-2000, the civil aviation sector was growing at the rate of six per cent, whereas the sector was witnessing a 20 per cent growth now. Closing down the existing airports would cause a lot of hardship to air travellers in view of the rising volume of air traffic in the two cities, he said.

Several members, including Mr Ananta Kumar (BJP), Mr Chandra Kant Khaire (Shiv Sena) and Mr Mohan Singh (SP), associated themselves with Mr Acharia on the issue.
