AIADMK to agitate against sand quarrying tomorrow

Chennai, Mar 13 (UNI) Alleging indiscriminate sand quarrying in Tamil Nadu, former Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa today said the party would stage an agitation in Theni district tomorrow against sand quarrying in Andipatti.

In a statement here, she said the people of Andipatti Assembly constituency were facing serious problems after the DMK Government passed a Government order, permitting sand quarrying in river Vaigai at Dharmarajapuram village in Theni district, as they relied on the river water for cultivation and drinking.

Party Treasurer O Panneerselvam and party Theni District Secretary Thanga Tamizhselvan would lead the agitation, she said.

Ms Jayalalithaa said indiscriminate sand quarrying in river beds had affected the water table in many areas and posed a grave threat to the environment.
