Pudukkottai, Mar 12: The District Administration plans to construct drying yards and godowns at nine places in the district.
District Collector D Uthirakkumaran, in a press release here today, said the proposed godowns would help the farmers to process their agricultural produce and to stock them under safe conditions, He said the infrastructure, provided under the World Bank-aided 'Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management (IAMWARM) project would be implemented in the South Vellar and Paambaar sub-basins in the district.
While six units would be constructed in Perumarudhur, Arasamalai, Virachilai, Kongudi, Alavayal and Annavasal villages, all in the South Vellar sub-basin, the remaining three would come up at Irumbaanadu, Madhagam and Thuraiyur in the Paambaar sub-basin, he said.
An Agri Business Centre (ABC) would also be set up at Tiruvarankulam and Embal. The yards would facilitate the farmers to dry their crop and prevent damage to crops stored in the godowns by pests or rodents, he added.
