Chennai, Mar 11 (UNI) Carrom World Women's Champion Ilavazhagi of Tamil Nadu got a bonanza today.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced a cash award of Rs 10 lakh to Chennai-based Ilavazhagi whose father is a cart puller.
The award is in recognition of the glory she had brought to Tamil Nadu through her achievements in the fledgling sport, an official press release said.
Ilavazhagi, hailing from an indigent family, had bagged the crown in world championships held in France recently.
''The award is also to motivate her to greater achievements in the sport,'' the Chief Minister said in the release.
A private engineering college in the city, encouraging sports, had given a job to Ilavazhagi as sports officer, it may be recalled.
