The match never reached the expected heights but the eight-time grand slam winner from the US, packed enough punch to overwhelm the Swiss girl, who is ranked just below her at 12, in the WTA listing.

The 29th singles title brought US Dollars 95,500 to Serena's kitty along with 275 WTA points while Schnyder collected US Dollars 51,190 and 190 WTA points to her account. Serena held the upper hand from the start. The two players exchanged service breaks in the sixth and seventh games, after Serena was warned by the chair umpire for breaking the racket by hitting it on the court, despite saving two break points in the fourth game. The third seed broke Schnyder in the crucial 12th game after the Swiss made errors repeatedly, while both the players struggled with their serves throughout the 90-minute final. In the second set, both players suffered due to bad serving but Serena profitted breaking Schnyder three times.

Schnyder, who was leading the second set 3-1, had to blame herself for not taking the match to the third set and wasted two break points while Serena was trailing 3-5. This helped Serena make a comeback and once levelled the scores at 3-3, it was the US star player all the way. She went on to hammer the Swiss player whose error filled game fell alarmingly. A break in the eighth game put Serena in a commanding 5-3 lead and later saved two breakpoints in the ninth to win with relative ease.
