S C Jamir takes over as Maharashtra Governor

Mumbai, Mar 9: Goa Governor S C Jamir today assumed the additional charge of Maharashtra at a brief oath taking ceremony held at Raj Bhavan here.

Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Justice Swatanter Kumar administered the oath of office to Mr Jamir. Mr Jamir would hold the additional charge till a permanent incumbent is appointed by President Pratibha Patil. Outgoing Governor S M Krishna, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Shivajirao Deshmukh, Ministers Ashok Chavan and Preetam Kumar Shegaonkar, Sheriff of Mumbai Indu Shahani and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Mr Jamir was given the additional responsibility following the resignation of Governor S M Krishna, who would be moving to his home state of Karnataka, to re-enter active politics and prepare the Congress for the forthcoming Assembly polls.

After a long stint as Chief Minister of Nagaland, Mr Jamir tookover as Governor of Goa in 2004.

Mr Jamir would deliver the customary address to the joint session of the Maharashtra legislature tomorrow beginning its first session of the year.
