PUCL submits report to NCST on firing on tribals
Ahmedabad, Mar 8 (UNI) People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), a human rights group, has sought the intervention of the National Commission of Scheduled Tribes (NCST) into the February 13 incident of police firing on Adivasis of Vijaynagar in Sabarkantha district that had resulted in two deaths and left three injured.
The PUCL had instituted its own fact-finding committee into the incident and has rushed a copy of the committee's report to the NCST.
The PUCL had sent a five-member fact finding team, led by a well known social scientist Dr Ghanshyam Shah, which prepared a detailed report after meeting the families of the victims, eye-witness of the incident and local leaders, PUCL general secretary Gautam Thaker said.
The PUCL report stated that the police firing on tribals was ''irresponsible, insensitive and unwarranted'' and demanded immediate inquiry by a High Court Judge and also sought the suspension of police officers responsible for the incident.
PUCL has also demanded that a compensation of Rs 10 lakh be paid to the families of each of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to those who were injured.
