New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) The way was today paved for construction of low cost houses for the urban poor under the JNNURM, with the State Level Steering Committee under JNNURM giving its ex-facto approval to the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs).

At the third Meeting of State Level Steering Committee, where MCD councillors and number of MLAs and other senior officers were present, ex-facto approval was given to the DPRs concerning construction of 55,586 low cost houses with an estimated cost of Rs 1252.57 crore under Sub-mission for basic services to the urban poor. The DPRs have already been submitted to the Union Government.

The DSIIDC would construct 39,820 dwelling units at Poot Khurd, Bawana, Narela, Bhorgarh, Samaspur, Dera Mandi, Neb Sarai and Jonapur whereas Slum and JJ Department would construct 2256 dwelling units at Sector-23 Rohini and Sector-16(B) Dwarka.

The DDA would construct 13,510 dwelling units at Narela, Rohini, Dwarka and in its East Zone.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister of Delhi Shiela Dikshit exhorted concerned agencies to constitute a special committee to monitor maintenance of these flats after allotment.

It may be recalled that under financing pattern of JNNURM, 35 per cent cost is to be released by the Centre as grant whereas the state government would bear 15 per cent which would be released as grant.

Rest of the amount would be generated through loan from financial institutions. JNNURM has been formulated to build infrastructure in the cities by improving quality of services and spatial development of the cities to bring about qualitative improvement of urban areas and also to take up schemes for upgradation of slums for providing basic services to urban poor.

The Committee also approved sub-city development plan of the NDMC with a total expenditure of Rs 1466.76 crore and also gave its nod to the project of re-development of Connaught Place at an estimated amount of Rs 670.98 crore.

It was informed in the meeting that re-development of Connaught Place would be completed by July 2010 i.e. well before commencement of the Commonwealth Games. While executing re-development process, basic character of Connaught Place would be preserved.
