Patty Schnyder scalps Yan Zi to march into final

By Staff

Bangalore, Mar 8 (UNI) Exhibiting a superb all court display, fourth seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland drubbed unseeded Yan Zi of China 6-3, 6-4 to storm into the final of the USD 600,000 WTA Tier II Bangalore Open tennis tournament here today.

Patty will meet the winner of the second semifinal clash between the Williams sisters Venus and Serena, who play later in the day.

The Swiss lass, the oldest in the tournament at 29 years, had the measure of Yan from the start and gave no leeway to the Chinese giant killer who had scalped the top seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the quarter finals and eighth seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia in the first round. She ably subdued Yan with her consistency and kept the ball in play for most of the time.

This forced Yan to make unforced errors in the first set. Patty set the tone for her easy win breaking the 23-year-old Chinese in the very first game of the match and held serve in the next to lead 2-0. Yan, however, made a come back, breaking Patty in the fourth to level scores 2-2, but the Swiss broke back immediately and coasted to the win the first set.

A fight back by Yan in the sixth game did not shake the fourth seed as she saved two break points to lead 4-2. Then the game went on serves and Patty went one set up with a third service break in the ninth game.
