Ludhiana, Mar 8 (UNI) Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain today exhorted the Social and Educational organisations to launch a mass drive to root out the menace of female foeticide from society.
Addressing a State-level seminar organised today by Punjab State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with NGOs on Female Foeticide and Drugs at Khanna, Mr Justice Jain said that the situation in Punjab and Haryana in regard to sex ratio was worst in the country and mindset of people favouring male child was required to be completely changed.
Pointing out that in Punjab the sex ratio had declined to 877 females after every 1000 males, he said that the time had come to launch a concerted drive on both educative and punitive fronts involving the NGOs, government agencies, people's representatives and educational institutions to grapple with the social evil.
Mr Justice Jain said that a new Legal Services Committee headed by Justice K S Grewal had been constituted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which would ensure legal services to the people who wish to file PILs in High Courts regarding the violations of Human rights and offences relating to social evils.
He said that the offences against women and children and spread of drugs and intoxicants could only be tackled by improving women empowerment and voluntary and social organizations could play an important role to educate the people about the fatal affects of these evils.
On this occasion, the Chief Justice also administered an oath to the participants to dedicate themselves for the cause of eradication of female feticide and other social evils from the society and to raise strong voice against the culprits of the evils.
