16 people arrested in connection with violence over border issue
Belgaum, Mar 8 (UNI) Police today arrested 16 people in connection with violence following passing of a resolution by Nipani Town Muncipality, demanding merger of Nippani with Maharashtra.
Superintendent of Police Hemant Nibalkar said the arrested were remanded in judicial custody till March 10 by a Magistrate, before whom they were produced. They were lodged in Hindalga jail.
The resolution, passed under the chairmanship of JD(S) Shubangi Joshi, also demanded merger of Belgaum, Karwar, Bidar and other places with Maharashtra.
The resolution evoked widespread protest in the state with Karnataka 'Rakshana Vedike' activists going on a rampage near Nippani Town Muncipality. Vehicles parked inside the office premises were also damaged by the angry activists.
The agitators demanded to impose a ban on Maharashtra Ekikharana Samithi (MES).
Meanwhile, JD(S) state unit has decided to suspend from the party Ms Joshi and other members for passing the resolution. JD(S) State President Mirajuddin Patil ordered issuance of notices to all those involved, including Ms Joshi.
