Lankan Navy detains 60 Indian fishermen
Chennai, Mar 7 (UNI) About 60 fishermen from Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, who ventured into the sea in six boats, were 'abducted' allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy today.
Reports received here said the fishermen, hailing from Thoothoor and Chinnathurai fishing hamlets in the district, were fishing in mid-sea when they were surrounded by the Lankan Navy, who detained them and their boats.
The fishermen had ventured into the sea this morning.
As the news spread, tension gripped the fishing hamlets and officials of Fisheries Department were taking steps to secure their release.
The abduction of the fishermen comes barely two days after a fisherman from Rameswaram was shot dead allegedly by the Lankan Navy.
