SP workers burn Mayawati in effigy, police resorts to lathi-charge
Varanasi, Mar 6 (UNI) Police here today resorted to lathi-charge on agitating Samajwadi Party (SP) workers and traders, who burnt the effigy of the Uttar Pradesh chief minister and district administration, over the murder of their party leader.
The SP workers and traders took out a procession under Raja Darwaja Vyapar Mandal to protest the murder of the party leader, also former Varanasi Nagar Nigam Corporator Murari Yadav yesterday.
Chanting anti-administration slogans, the SP workers burnt, CM Mayawati and district administration in effigy in front of the chowk police station, sources said.
Wherein, while snatching the effigy, a clash took place between the agitators and police.
Police resorted to lathi-charge to quell the mob.
Meanwhile, the shopkeepers in Hadaha Sarai and Raja Darwaja had closed the shutters of their shops in protest against the leader's murder.
The SP has also given a call for Varanasi bandh on March 8 in protest.
Unidentified gunmen had shot dead Mr Yadav yesterday.
