Port Blair, Mar 6 (UNI) The Congress unit of Andaman and Nicobar Islands today demanded reallocation of all tne MBBS seats, meant for top students in premier medical colleges of the country.
The premier institutes include colleges like JIPMER(Puducherry), Lady Hardinge Medical College(New Delhi), Dr S N Medical College Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Medical College, Trissur(Kerala) and in MLN Medical College, Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh).
The row over allotment of MBBS seats in Andaman and Nicobar is getting worse with the increasing discomforture among the islanders, who allege that they had been robbed off their prestigious MBBS seats by the government.
Last year, these seats in prestigious colleges have been taken away from the Andaman and Nicobar quota and to compensate one seat at BRB Medical College, Gorakhpur (UP), three seats in Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan (West Bengal), three seats in Burdwan Medical College, Bankura (West Bengal) and 4 seats in NB Medical College, Darjeeling (West Bengal) were allocated by the Ministry of Health to the students of the tsunami-hit islands.
''Places like Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, Bankura and Darjeeling in West Bengal are ill-famed for eve-teasing, molestation, robbery and drug-trafficking, and students aspiring for advanced studies get discouraged by these ,'' K Ganeshan, chief spokesperson of Andaman Congress unit told UNI today at Port Blair.
The senor Congress leader said in case of Darjeeling, students from a hot and humid place like Andaman might not be able to cope with the cold weather.
Last year, after intense agitation, the islanders failed to get these seats for Andaman's students. Congress today urged the Andaman and Nicobar administration to pursue this matter with the Ministry of Health so that by August during distribution of seats, Andaman gets back all these prestigious seats from Ministry.
