Tiruchirapalli, Mar 5: Solar fencing has helped in protecting biodiversity in reserve forest areas in this district, according to District Forest Officer (DFO) Subrat Mohapatra.

Speaking at a function here yesterday, he said the fencing had helped to prevent cattles of the nearby village from entering into the reserve forest area. He said planting of indigenous species of plants in forest areas in the district under the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Programme has ensured vibrant growth. The population of slender loris as per the latest census had risen to 35, he said adding the number of bisons had also gone up to 200 in the reserve forest areas of Manapparai and Thuvarankurichi in the district.

The five types of vegetation in the forest areas of Tiruchirapalli district were of great interest to botanists, he added.
