London, Mar 5 : Once viewed as the preserve of grumpy old men in rocking chairs, the cardigan is making a big comeback thanks to male fashionistas like David Beckham and Jude Law.

The knitted garments are flying off the shelves as young men in particular follow the trend set by the famous personalities, according to the supermarket chain Asda.

Asda's George label reported selling more men's cardigans in the first two months of this year than in the past three years.

According to fashion experts, the woollen garment has shaken off its Val Doonican associations - becoming an emblem of cool for gay and straight men alike.

"The cardigan is an exceptionally versatile piece of clothing. They look great with jeans, but when teamed with a suit guys become the male equivalent of the sexy librarian," the Telegraph quoted Fiona Lambert, design director for George at Asda, as saying.
