Bangalore, Mar 5: Unseeded Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan ousted eighth seed Agnes Szavay of Hungary 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 to enter the quarterfinals of the 600,000 Dollar WTA Tier II Bangalore Open here today.
In the marathon battle that lasted more than two hours, Akgul, who had yesterday dethroned defending champion Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia in the first round, continued her giant killing act with deep serves and measured backhand strokes that troubled Agnes right through the match.
After losing the first set 6-4, Akgul took an early lead (3-0) in the second, but allowed the Hungarian to overtake 3-5 by committing unforseen errors. However, she was quick enough to regroup herself and take the set to a tie breaker and win it eventually.
A keen battle was witnessed in the decider, with Akgul taking a 2-0 early lead and later led 3-1, before going on to win the match with an ace on the first match point.
