Mahoba, Mar 4: At least 24 idols, holding historical and archeological significance, were stolen from a 300-year-old temple here late last night, police said today.
Masked miscreants broke into the ancient temple premises at Singhwahini area and looted the idols, jewelleries and other valuables worth lakhs of rupees after assaulting the priest Suresh Tiwari. Early this morning the devotees, who reached the sacred place to pay obeisance, reported the matter to police.
Tiwari was admitted to hospital in critical state. Area inspector Jalim Singh inspected the robbery site with his team and recorded priest's testimony.
The temple had been robbed 16-years-ago also, temple administrative head Manoj Tiwari apprised. Investigations were underway.
