Indore, Mar 4: Amidst sharp rise in the prices of edible oils, Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade (COOIT) has estimated the oil availability to be around 84.8 lakh tonnes this oil year which is 7.2 lakh tonnes more as against last year's 77.6 lakh tonnes.
The COOIT has presented these figures for the year 2007-08 for nine major oilseeds, in its 29 th All India Seminar on Rabi Oilseeds and Oil Trade and Industry concluded on Sunday at Agra. The rabi oilseed production for the year 2007-08 has been estimated to be 86 lakh tonnes against last year"s 95.2 lakh tonnes.
COOIT Chairman Mr Davish Jain said that due to a better crop in the kharif 2007-08 season, the total oilseeds production (kharif and rabi) has been estimated at 254.9 lakh tonnes against last year"s 229.7 lakh tonnes.
The rabi 2007-08 oilseeds area was 89.58 lakh hectares which is 7.38 lakh hectares less than last year. The major shortfall in rabi oilseed production was in Rapeseed/Mustard which was estimated to be 50.9 lakh tonnes against last year"s 60.2 lakh tonnes.
The area of rapeseed/mustard for the current year as on Feb 22 was 59.6 lakh hectares against last year"s 66.07 lakh hectares in the same period, he added.
