Mayawati writes to PM over inclusion of castes in SC category

Lucknow, Mar 4 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government has set the ball rolling for inclusion of 17 castes belonging to the Most Backward class in the category of Scheduled Castes (SC) by sending a recommendation letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

This would be for the second time that UP government had sent recommendation for inclusion of 17 castes in the SC category.

The Previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government had sent a similar recommendation in 2005 which was still pending before the UPA government.

Announcing this in the state a assembly here , Chief Minister Mayawati said a letter in this regard had been sent to the Prime Minister today urging the Centre to amend the Constitution to increase the quota of the SC as per the population.

The castes which have been recommended by the state to be included in the SC category include Rajbhar, Nishad Bind, Manjhi and Prajapati as per the provisions of Article 341 of the constitution..

She said these recommendated castes fulfil all the terms and conditions for a SC status and the state government had made their social, economic and education backwardness the main critersion for according the status.

Talking to mediapersons, Ms Mayawati said as Parliament has all the power to grant any caste the status of SC, hence the government would continue to pursue the centre to approve the recommendation at the earliest.

Mentioning the ordinance issued by the previous SP government to give these castes a SC status, she said people of these castes turned into general category after the Allahabad High Court squashed the ordinance as being unconstitutional '' The past government was never sincere with the commitment and they only damaged these castes as since 2005 these castes were not given the status of Most Backward after the state government's ordinance was squashed by the HC'', she asserted.

The Chief Minister said that her government had withdrawn the controversial ordinance progumulated in 2005 and until these castes were given SC status they would be treated as Most Backward.
