Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, Mar 4 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Crime Branch Police today arrested a police Inspector for allegedly taking Rs 19,000 in cash and two mobile phones from a woman 'drug peddler' recently.

Police sources said Inspector of Police Janardhanan, attached to the Vadamadurai police station in the district, had intercepted a car during night patrolling on February 22. On vehicle check, some contraband was found with the occupants-- four men and a woman.

He allegedly forced the men to leave the spot and detained Ms Bindu, a serial actress in a lodge and demanded 25 per cent of the contraband as a 'ransom' to set her free.

However, after striking a 'compromise', the Inspector took away Rs 19,000 in cash and two mobile phones from her and set her free.

A case was registered today on the directions of the Director General of Police (DGP), following a complaint from Ms Bindu.

Cases were registered against the Inspector under IPC Sections 342 (illegal detention), 364 (a) (kidnapping for ransom), 506 (criminal intimidation), 419 (cheating by personation) and 387 (putting person in fear of death).

Mr Janardhanan was lodged in the Dindigul sub-jail this evening.
