Lucknow, Mar 3 (UNI) United opposition in the Uttar Pradesh assembly today demanded immediate election for the post of deputy speaker as it was hampering the normal functioning of different committees of the House.
However, speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar reserved his judgement on the demand.
Raising the issue during zero hour, Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari said there should not be more delay in holding the election of the deputy speaker as the committees related to question, petition and privilage were non-functional for its absence.
Mr Tiwari's statement was also supported by SP, BJP and RLD members. They said it was unfortunate that even after 10 months of the constitution of the assembly, election of the deputy speaker was not held so far.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Lalji Verma said it was upto the speaker to announce the date of the election for the post of the deputy speaker.
As per the tradition, the principal opposition Samajwadi Party should candidate should get the opportunity for the post of the deputy speaker.
