Srinagar, Mar 3 (UNI) Night in Pahalgam, the base camp of holy Amarnath cave and most attractive tourist destination in south Kashmir, remained cold after the minimum temperature dipped to minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.
However, it was two degrees above the minimum temperature in Srinagar The minimum temperature at Pahalgam was minus 1.5 degree which will help full formation of holy Shivlingam in the Amarnath caves where annual two-month-long pilgrimage is to be conducted from June.
However, due to melting of Ice-Lingam inside the cave shrine because of warm temperature in the cave shrine and its periphery last year before the start of pilgrimage, lakhs of devotees were disappointed.
The authorities, however, said if the temperature would remain below the freezing print during the next two months, the ice-lingam will last for the full pilgrimage period of two months.
The temperature during the night was normal or above normal.
Srinagar recorded 3.8 degrees Celsius this morning, two degrees above normal today, the first day of reopening of educational institutions after three month long winter vacation.
The water level in river Jehlum and its tributaries and other nullahs in the valley has also increased as snow on the mountain peaks had started melting because of above normal temperature during the day.
This will help increase in local power generation and overcome the water crisis in near future, officials believed.
