Hyderabad, Mar 3 (UNI) Members of the CPI and CPI(M) staged a walkout in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly today in protest against the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) allegedly awarding contract for washing linen to a Tamil Nadu-based firm, instead of the washermen cooperative societies in the state.

Dissatisfied with Endowments Minister J Ratnakar Rao's reply that the TTD awarded contracts only after calling for tenders, CPI floor leader Ch Venkata Reddy and CPI(M) floor leader N Narasimaiah led their party members out of the House.

Earlier, the Communist leaders demanded that local cooperative societies be given preference in award of contracts. They wanted the Government to fill up washermen posts in the TTD, Medical Department, police Department, jails and social welfare hostels.

The Minister said washermen associations were intimated specially to participate in the tenders floated by the TTD.
