India trounce Austria 7-3 to win second match

{image-indian hockey_03032008.jpg www.oneindia.com}Santiago, (Chile) Mar 3: Maintaining their winning streak, India routed Austria 7-3 as they scored four goals in the last 15 minutes to win their second match of the Olympic hockey qualifying tournament here today.

Austria gave a good account of themselves as they matched India blow for blow in the first half.
Robert Buchta drew first blood as he rammed home in only the second minute of the match. However, Dilip Tirkey converted a penalty corner in the ninth minute to level the scores. Dilip Tirkey, provided India with the lead soon after as he scored another goal in the 23rd minute. Austria came back strongly to level the scores through Christian Minar (28th min, PC), who hit a direct hit and both the teams went into the half time with scores locked at 2-2.

In the second half, India tried to pierce their opponnent's defence but the Austrians did well to keep the reigning Asian champions at bay.

However, the Indians were not to be denied as Ignace Tirkey (41st min), broke the deadlock when he scored a beauty of a goal through a powerful reverse flick.

India then rained goals as Shivendra Singh (51st and 55th min), Bharath (53 min), Rajpal Singh (53 min) scored four goals in the space of five minutes.

Austria pulled one back as Minar reduced the margin to score in the 60th minute through a penalty corner.

Meanwhile, in other matches of the day Great Britain thrashed Russia 8-0 while hosts Chile blanked Mexico 4-0.

After the second day of the tournament, India and Great Britain are leadind the points with six points apiece.

However, Britain is ahead of India in terms of goal difference.

India will now take on Mexico in their next encounter.
