Adivasis threaten to commit suicide
Pathanamthitta, Mar 3 (UNI) The police had to withdraw evicting the activists of 'Sadhu Jana Samyuktha Vimochana Vedi' from the Chengara Estate of Harrison Malayalam Plantation in the wake of a threat of suicide by the encroachers.
The activists were perched on tree-tops ready to commit suicide.
The women activists were threatening to commit self-immolation.
Around 10,000 encroachers who occupied 800 acres had been living there for the past seven months in makeshift tents.
The directive of the High Court to evict the encroachers before January 27 without blood-shed had put the police in a quandary.
The police had planned to secretly storm the occupied land in the wee hours. Heavy police contingents were deployed at the district headquarters. But, the plan leaked out.
