Kathmandu, Mar 2 (UNI) Former Indian Ambassador to Vienna and senior diplomat Sheel Kant Sharma took over as the Secretary General of SAARC, according to the SAARC secretariat here.
Secretary General of SAARC, Lyonpo Chenkyab Dorji of Bhutan relinquished the charge of Secretary General on February 29.
Dr Sharma was appointed to the post by the twenty-ninth Session of the SAARC Council of Ministers held in New Delhi on December 7-8, 2007.
Born on January 10, 1950, Dr Sharma holds a doctorate in High Energy from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1973.
The tenure of the Secretary General is three years.
