Kathmandu, Mar 2: An Indian woman was killed while her husband seriously injured when unidentified assailants attacked them at Gucchatole of New Road area in the Nepalese capital on Friday evening, police said today.
Kiran Gupta (35) and her husband Roshan (38)-- proprietors of Pashupati Shoemakers-- were attacked as they had denied giving in to extortion threats, Kantipur quoted chief of Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu, Sarbendra Khanal as saying. Kiran, who succumbed to her injuries on the way to a hospital, hailed from Sitamarhi district of Indian state of Bihar.Roshan was admitted to the Escorts Norvic Hospital in Thapathali in a serious condition.
Police suspect the assailants could be some petty drug addicts rather than any professional criminal gang members, Mr Khanal said. A manhunt has been launched, he added. Nepal Chamber of Commerce has condemned the attack and announced a day-long shut down in Kathmandu Valley today, in protest against the attack.
The Chamber denounced the attacks against businessmen and urged the government to ensure their security.
