Mother throws baby to pond, commits suicide

Kendrapada, Feb 29 (UNI) In a shocking case, a mother unable to bear the mental and physical torture for giving birth to a female baby committed suicide after throwing the baby into a pond.

One Pratima Nayak, aged about 30, the spouse of Abhya Nayak, a resident of Gandakula village under Pattamundai police station in Kendrapara district, committed suicide last Thursday along with her 10-month-old daughter.

According to the family members of the deceased woman, Abhaya, the husband of Pratima, used to torture his wife both mentally and physically for giving birth to three daughters.

The Pattamundai police on being informed about the incident from the local people rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies of the mother and the baby from the pond, sent those for autopsy.

An unnatural death case had been registered in the Pattamundai police station.

The local villagers had urged the district administration and law enforcing agencies to register a criminal case against the deceased woman's husband, who compelled his wife to commit suicide.
