Kolkata, Feb 28 (UNI) South African Premier division outfit Santos FC comprehensively beat Mahindra United 2-0 in the second tie today of the IFA Shield at the Salt Lake Stadium here.
In contrast to the first match it was a fast paced tie in which Santos FC left their stamp as the superior side, not only in terms of physical prowess, but also in their technical and tactical brilliance.
The first goal was a brilliant solo from striker Tasleem Paulse in the seventh minute. Collecting a clearance from the South African half, he sprinted down the middle shrugged off Sunil Kumar with a sharp inside and volleyed into the far corner with the entire Mahindra United defence caught napping.
The second goal came in the 50th minute when Danny Rodrick cut through the Mahindra defence like knife through butter and Paulse beat the off-side trap to flick home past a hapless Sandip Nandy.
The match was a tale of tearing apart the Mumbai outfit's defence only to fall at the last hurdle. Danny Rodrick, Paulse and Farrugia, who overlapped from his position as central defender, ran the home team defence ragged. First Danny shot over from close, then Paulse square pass for Farrugia skimmed past the crosspiece and then again Zuroog Daniels blew one over the top from close.
But the best planned move was perhaps came perhaps in the dying minutes of the second half, when Clifton david's freekick was hurled goalward with a clever instep by Ruzaigh Gamildien. The ball traveled to Danny, whose shot missed the target by a whisker, the Mahindra defence hardly having a clue.
Mahindra United's forays into the rival den were few and far between. In the first half Yakubu set up Thoi Singh but he was quickly dispossessed. 67 minutes in the match Mahindra had their best opportunity with Yusuf Yakubu overlapping from the left and flicked inside the box to see Andrews Mensa Pomeyie take a volley on the run. Santos goalie Eduan Andre Nuade tipped the trajectory over for corner. Again in the 83rd minute Andrew shot into the Santos keeper after being fed by Yakubu.
