Chandigarh, Feb 28: Reliance Communications today announced the rolling out of telephone service to 5,600 villages in Himachal Pradesh under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF).

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in 2005 had set up the USO fund toward establishing Rural Household Direct Exchange Lines (RDEL) in specified Short Distance Charging Areas (SDCAs). The USO fund helps subscribers living in rural locations avail telecommunication services at a subsidised cost.

Reliance Communications Ltd Chief Operating Officer (Himachal Pradesh) Rahul Chaudhary in a release issued here said, ''I am delighted to announce that Reliance Communications has rolled out telephone connections to 5,600 villages in Hamirpur, Mandi and Solan districts under this particular programme. Through this programme, we will able to give impetus to the government's rural initiative and fulfill our obligation by taking the telephone to far-flung areas.''
